Tourism destinations are already facing growing climate pressures, from extreme heat and water stress to flooding, wildfires and damage to natural assets. Yet while many destinations urgently need investment to adapt and build resilience, tourism still sits largely outside mainstream climate finance systems.
Projects are often too fragmented or small-scale to attract investment, destinations may lack the technical capacity to develop fundable proposals, and there are still few mechanisms designed to connect local tourism needs with climate finance, insurance or investment structures. As a result, tourism’s climate adaptation finance gap remains significant.
Exploring solutions at London Climate Action Week
To explore possible solutions, Travel Forward has teamed up with Cornell Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise and University of Edinburgh Business School / Edinburgh Futures Institute to host a roundtable during London Climate Action Week focused on climate finance for tourism adaptation.
We’re bringing together a small group of stakeholders from tourism, climate finance, insurance, investment, academia and destinations to help shape practical research and pilot ideas. Our focus will be on identifying fundable project models, building the case for investment, and exploring the intermediary or governance mechanisms that may be needed to connect destination needs with appropriate finance.
The roundtable will take place at Expedia Group’s offices in Angel, London. Arrival is from 8:00am for tea, coffee and a light breakfast, with the discussion running from 8:30am to 10:00am. Full venue details will be shared on confirmation of attendance.
